grain surfboards

i’ve wanted to build a wooden surfboard for a long time. a few years ago i spent some time with tom wegener at his farm outside of noosa head, australia. tom builds all sorts of surfboards, alaias and paddleboards out of a wood called paulownia. the experience in noosa reinforced my desire to build a wooden board. someday i will do it. for anyone interested, there is a unique business in maine called grain surfboards. they offer built boards and kits.

andy paiko is an artist, a glass blower and in my opinion, someone who is going to change the way people think. back in school andy and i used to blow glass together with our friends, ken peterson and evan chambers. since then, andy has continued to challenge himself mentally and physically in both his hot and cold shop. check out this video about the making of a functional glass spinning wheel. check out this one about andy’s recent installation at the portland contemporary craft museum called transference.
