Bike Paintings

A Moment of Desperation
San Luis Obispo, May 2007

It’s late Friday afternoon, just 7 days away from an upcoming art show. As usual, Jimmy and Brian have nothing ready. This is what they do; they thrive on the stress and panic of deadlines. So they decide to procrastinate some more and let the weekend decide their fate. Monday brings new hope. Beside Brian’s desk lie three new abstract landscapes that Jimmy painted over the weekend. All three are on long, horizontal wood panels, but have deliciously different textures and color. These abstract beauties are ready to hang, except for one thing. The art show has a theme – bicycles. There are no bikes to be found.

One thing is agreed – the paintings need to appear as abstract landscapes. The rest is left to Brian, who was already thinking about some of the strange bike events witnessed in San Luis Obispo. Memories of bike battles secretly officiated under cover of darkness – wheels slamming, chicken drumsticks flying, losers pounding asphalt – not to mention swarms of maniacal cyclists in costume flooding the streets of downtown each month with diapers, mustaches, tin cans, prom dresses, wigs, bathrobes, ghetto blasters, tall bikes and sofas on wheels. From this, the bubble heads emerge – awkward, goofy, determined, confused, playful. The first three paintings became Unicycles, Tandem, and Tricycles. And they made it to the art show on time…barely.
