Light Pilots

artist statement

To begin this series, Jimmy and Brian selected several photographs about glassblowing. Each artist started a panel – Brian began Off the Grid while Jimmy started the first round for The Rookie. After passing each image back and forth several times, they each finished the other person's panel.

Off the Grid

Round 1

Brian started off using close-up shots of patterns on blown glass vases.

Light Pilots

Round 2

Jimmy added some color, parts of a contact sheet and a few other elements.

Light Pilots

Round 3

Brian went "Good Will Hunting" on this one, including a Oaxaca-inspired skeleton while he had the chance.

Light Pilots

Round 4

Jimmy redeemed himself with an amazing color-shift and radial turbine pattern.

Light Pilots

Round 5

Brian attempted to obliterate most of the smaller details that became too distracting for him to concentrate.

Light Pilots

Round 6

Jimmy used Brian's grid for an underlying photo array. Above it, lies a subtle image of the most notorious Light Pilot of them all – Mr. William Finney Smith.

The Rookie

Round 1

Jimmy began The Rookie with a combination of over-saturation and high-contrast.

Light Pilots

Round 2

Brian added light sabers, eyes and a few extra heads!

Light Pilots

Round 3

Jimmy saw the heads and went crazy with them.

Light Pilots

Round 4

The light sabers made Brian think of his love of science fiction and, well...

Light Pilots

Round 5

Feeling a little overwhelmed by all the colors, Jimmy toned it back down.

Light Pilots

Round 6

Brian ended it with a tribute to the rookie himself, Evan Chambers.
